Green Funerals

By making a few conscious choices, it is entirely possible to create a dignified and serene funeral ceremony that aligns harmoniously with the environment. Opting for a green funeral is the natural choice.

Our commitment to assisting families in achieving the greenest possible funeral extends to every aspect of our personal and professional practices. As proud founder members of the Association of Green Funeral Directors, we actively promote and uphold eco-friendly principles throughout our services.

Cremation or Burial

When planning a funeral, the first decision is whether to choose cremation or burial.

Cremation

Cremation remains the preferred choice for many in Australia. However, despite efforts made by crematoriums to modernise equipment and reduce emissions cremation still consumes a significant amount of natural gas. At Eco Funerals, we can provide guidance on minimising the carbon footprint associated with cremation and offer insights on handling cremated remains.

In addition, we offer a selection of coffins crafted from sustainable materials. To offset the carbon emissions produced by a cremation, we have partnered with ReForest Now, a local tree planting charity, enabling us to make donations on behalf of our clients.

An informed choice

At Eco Funerals we place a strong emphasis on staying informed about the latest environmentally sustainable practices, both present and future. We strive to gather and provide comprehensive information to ensure that you can make an informed choice when it comes to planning a funeral. Our commitment to transparency and knowledge sharing empowers you to make decisions that align with your values and contribute to a greener future.

Burial

Natural or woodland burial is increasingly recognised as the environmentally friendly choice and is often the preferred option for a green funeral.

Woodland burial grounds

Woodland and natural burial grounds offer diverse characteristics and pricing structures. Some sites resemble wildflower meadows, while others feature mature woodlands or scenic views. These grounds may be privately owned, managed by nature charities or designated areas within county council cemeteries.

Opting for a woodland burial contributes to the creation of protected woodland areas for future generations. These sites are managed to promote native wildlife, plants and wildflowers. Families find solace in the serene and natural environment, allowing them to embrace the understanding that loss is a natural part of life and the Earth’s life cycle.

Burial on your own land

We are frequently consulted for advice by new sites seeking to develop land for use as woodland burial grounds. Additionally, if you prefer a burial on your own land, we can facilitate the necessary arrangements. While this option is less common, we have experience working with environmental agencies to ensure compliance and a respectful burial on private property.

Eco-Friendly Coffins

One of the requirements for woodland or natural burial grounds is that the coffin must be 100% biodegradable, free from any plastic or metal components.

Coffins crafted from natural woven fibres, such as willow or bamboo, are considered acceptable for these burial grounds. Additionally, wooden coffins made from sustainably sourced wood are also suitable options. At Eco Funerals, we are here to offer guidance and support in selecting the appropriate coffin that aligns with the regulations and your preferences.

Grave marking in forest sites

In woodland and natural burial grounds, graves are marked with either small wooden markers, flat engraved natural stone markers or are left unmarked with the location recorded. These sites prioritise minimal maintenance and discourage items on graves, promoting the growth of native trees and plants. While not all graves can accommodate a tree, designated areas are available for dedicating trees and shrubs in memory of loved ones.

Embalming

At Eco Funerals, we believe that embalming is not necessary for every individual under our care. We only perform embalming if it is specifically requested by you. However, it is important to note that for those opting for a woodland or natural burial, we never utilise embalming practices. We prioritise providing personalised and environmentally conscious funeral arrangements tailored to your preferences.
